Thursday 7th October 2010 - 7.30pm at the Civic Centre

We are delighted to be able to tell you that John Motson, the BBC football commentator, will be speaking at the next Armchair Club Sportsman's Dinner on Thursday 7th October. Regular attendee's of our Sportsman's Dinner will know that it has always been held on the first Monday in October but to have "Motty" come to Mansfield we have had to move the day to Thursday.
John Motson has been the dominant football commentary figure at the BBC since the late 1970s. His first FA Cup Final as commentator was 1977 in the match between Manchester United and Liverpool. He is famed for his sheepskin coat, which, on the satirical quiz show They Think its All Over, he revealed that he bought from a man in Hornchurch along with 7 identical coats, hoping that they would span his career.
Motty will be accompanied by Ricky George, the former Hereford player who came on as a substitute in arguably the greatest FA Cup shock of all time. Hereford met Newcastle United, of the First Division, in the Third Round in 1972 at St James Park and came away with a remarkable 2-2 draw. Who will forget the amazing scenes when Hereford won the replay with an equalizer from Ronnie Radford and Ricky George scoring the winner in a famous 2-1 win.
With the support of local businesses our fund raising efforts continue unabated and several awards have been made recently to local sportsmen and women as they strive, sometimes against all the odds it seems, to develop their potential to national and even Olympic status. We continue to work with SportsAid to identify and support genuine local talent.
October's dinner will continue of our efforts to raise money for those Olympic hopefuls who are preparing already for London 2012 and promises to be very special. Some of the area's leading sports personalities have enjoyed a helping hand from the money that has been raised, amongst them Rebecca Adlington, Sam Hynd and Oliver Wilson.
Our comedian is Steve Womack who is now firmly established as one of the country's finest entertainers, the bulk of his work being in the corporate market. Steve has entertained Armchair Club fans on a number of previous occasions but he's not been back to Mansfield for some years.
He sang and played guitar throughout Europe and Scandinavia; he played in pubs, clubs, bars, cafes, street corners and even a stint in a massage parlour (the less said about that the better). His ability to turn the mundane into the hilarious was soon to stretch itself to verbal material which would eventually find its way on to the screen and out of the mouths of many established comedy stars. The next step was both predictable and inevitable. Steve woke up one morning to find he was a comedian.
Steve's reputation as a safe bet on the corporate scene began to spread. His humour is sharp and fresh, and without being the slightest bit bland is unlikely to offend. Here's a video clip that will wet your appetite for Steve's humour:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uO9k0IcraQ
Our Speakers will entertain us for around an hour following an excellent traditional dinner. It promises to be another great Armchair night. Ticket prices have been held for the 4th year running at £30 per person and we can arrange individual tickets or multiples, and of course tables of 8, 10, and 12 for groups or companies. Invoices can be arranged.
For anyone booking and paying for their tickets before the 31st August the Armchair Club will present a copy of Motty's latest book and arrange for it to be signed by Motty himself on the night.
Confirming your booking couldn't be easier. Simply telephone Elaine at John Sankey's office on Mansfield 627247 or reply by e-mail to enquiries@armchairclub.org. Cheques should follow asap and certainly before the end of September. No tickets will be issued.
You and your guests are asked to arrive at the Civic Centre anytime after 7.00pm in readiness for the meal being served at 7.45pm. Dress as usual will be lounge suits or blazer and tie. Remember that Ladies are now very welcome at all Armchair Club events.
Finally, just an early note for your diary that the ever popular Question of Sport is on Monday 7th March 2011.
